We have been very busy updating our cocktail section to bring you our clever list of tips and tricks to take your cocktails to the next level!

We even interrupted a PS4 playing bartender to compile this list.. It was tense, but we escaped relatively unscathed!

Here Is A List Of Clever Tricks And Tips To Give Your Cocktails That Extra PAZAZZ!!

“Always remember you cannot polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter!!”

Whether your a bar owner wanting to justify that extra £2 price tag, entertaining at home, having a night in, or just fancy improving your own cocktail repertoire.  Here are some fun, simple, (and relatively hassle free) ideas to make your cocktails stand out…

1. Edible Flowers

th (9)

Edible flowers add a touch of elegance to any drink, so even if your cocktail abilities aren’t the best, your drink will look 5 star!

2. Ice Cubes

Be creative!  Edible flowers look great when frozen in ice cubes.  But you can do so much more, whether its the shape, colour, size that you vary, think about the drink you’re putting it in.  A nice, large, clear ice cube sphere works great in neat drinks like whiskey.

3. Rimming…

This is a great addition to any cocktail.  It works best with Margarita or Martini style glassware but you could try adding an (edible) gold foil rim to champagne flutes on special occasions.  Ingredients for a great rim;

  • Popping Candy
  • Sherbet
  • Sugar (Could be spiced with Cinnamon)
  • Powdered Dried Fruit (Cranberries or Blueberries work well)
  • Salt (Obviously)
  • Edible Glitter!
  • Sprinkles (Hundreds and Thousands)

Just remember that you will need to coat the rim of the glass in a liquid in order for the ingredients to stick.  Use something sensible for the drink you’ve made.  Fruit works well for this.

4. Candy Floss

It may sound very girly… and it is.  But, candy floss has a great ‘show stopper’ effect when added to cocktails!  Bear in mind that if you’re planning to heap a candy floss mountain on top of your cocktails, once it touches the surface it will dissolve so be quick and definitely do this last minute.  It’s also worth bearing in mind that once dissolved, it will alter the flavour of your drink.  Try pairing with a candy cane garnish for an over indulgent treat!

5. Caviar

Okay, so we’re not really suggesting you desecrate your lovely cocktail with fish junk, (unless that’s what your into, in which case by all means, go ahead…).  But if you’re not quite the budding mixologist, you can now buy caviar ‘beads’ or ‘bubbles’ in the food or gift departments at stores like Fenwicks or John Lewis to add to champagne or sparkling wines, cocktails or to serve alongside as a garnish.

6. Hibiscus Flower

Another trick that’s great for taking your sparkling wine to the next level is hibiscus flowers.  You can buy these in syrup, from most supermarkets.  They do subtly flavour your drink but they make a dramatic visual effect in no time at all.  Perfect for entertaining!

7. Glassware

th (11)

Firstly, this may seem obvious to most, but please, serve your drink in the appropriate glassware.  You can buy champagne flutes for less than £1 so please stop serving it in wine glasses if you’re trying to impress someone.  Fine, it might not change the flavour of the drink, but it does change the drinking experience.  Did you know, that you experience the scent of a drink differently depending on what glassware you use? No? Well now you do, so you’ve got no excuses.

There are all sorts of dramatic glassware you can get hold of to serve your drinks in, try something funky like a coconut shell for extra effect!

8. Layering

Now, while this isn’t generally difficult, you may need to engage those little grey cells…  A cocktail will only layer if the densities of what you’re trying to layer are different.  You won’t be layering the lime juice in your Cosmo…  Shots look great layered so why not try a B52 or perhaps a slippery nipple is more your type.  If you’re really struggling with this one, you can purchase a layering tool online for less than £10.

9. Light em up.. up.. up.. Light em up.. up.. up..

th (12)

Alcohol is, well, alcohol, which means it’s also flammable.  Why not try lighting your cocktail at the last minute before serving to really WOW your customer, friend, guest, whoever.  Just remember to put it out before they drink it… Unless they didn’t tip you… or you really don’t like them (just kidding..).  Remember to have something like a damp tea towel to hand in case this goes wrong, also bare in mind that only products with a high alcohol content will burn effectively, you should be looking for around 40% (this means you can’t just make a regular cocktail with 4 or 5 non-alcoholic ingredients in it and expect it to light).

10. So for number 10 we interrupted a bartender playing PS4 for his ideas… He recommended;

  • Sticking your straws to the side of your martini glass using the condensation
  • Ensuring your customer is not blind
  • Turning the lights on
  • NOT under ANY circumstances, using a cocktail umbrella!  (He was forceful about  this point)
  • Always remember you cannot polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter!!

Wise words there we think!  Thanks for reading and be sure to comment and let us know what you think of the page/site or if you try any of these let us know how it goes!  Of course, if you do happen to roll a turd in glitter, have yourself checked out, mentally, physically, emotionally….
